One morning, Deming Guo’s undocumented Chinese mother, Polly, goes to her job at a nail salon and never returns. Deming, 11, is eventually adopted by a pair of well-meaning white professors, renamed Daniel Wilkinson, and moved from the Bronx to a small town, where he struggles to assimilate while reconciling the memories of his mother and the community he left behind.
