Adult Services Librarian

Position Status: Non-exempt
Reports to: Library Director

Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Library Director, the Adult Services Librarian is responsible for upholding the library’s mission, enforcing the library’s policies/procedures, providing professional librarian services for adults that includes adult collection development, reference services, reader’s advisory, and coordinating adult programming that meets the needs of community residents and incorporates community resources. The Adult Services Librarian supervises volunteers that perform tasks directly related to adult services and also serves in a leadership role when the Library Director is not available.

Qualifications:

  • MLIS required; minimum one year’s experience working in a library setting; public library experience preferred; experience at a circulation desk and in reference services required.
  • Requires working knowledge of modern library policies, procedures, methods, best practices, and materials; knowledge of basic reference sources and research techniques; knowledge of database and online reference sources; Internet; computer applications and library system software.
  • Requires excellent computer skills, proficiency in using PC, Windows, Microsoft 365, Google Suite, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other social media platforms, Internet search capabilities, various devices (laptop, tablet, e-reading devices, iPad, iPhone, Android) to download apps and content provided to library patrons. Must demonstrate ability to assist patrons with use of computers and electronic devices, reference databases, electronic catalog.
  • Experience using an ILS required, familiarity with Evergreen (aka Spark in PA) especially helpful.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience with budget preparation/management preferred.
  • Knowledge/familiarity with basic cataloging principles preferred.
  • Requires excellent communication/interpersonal skills (listening, speaking, writing) to be used with staff, volunteers, and patrons that make up a diverse population with varying skill sets.
  • Requires good organizational skills, ability to prioritize workload effectively, and work independently and as part of a team.
  • Work is performed in a public service area that is busy, sometimes noisy, and may have frequent interruptions; must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time, move about the library, position self to use equipment such as a computer, telephone, digital equipment and scanner/printer/fax/copy machine, retrieve library materials from stacks for patrons quickly and easily, and detect and communicate with patrons and staff.
  • In compliance with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Child Protective Services Law, all employees are required to obtain/submit to the Library Director the Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background Check, FBI Criminal Background check, and Mandated Reporter Training Certificate prior to beginning employment and renew these required documents every 5 years.

Schedule & Benefits:

  • Full-time; 40 hours/week; weekdays, one evening per week, and two Saturdays per month.
  • Salary range is $45,000-$49,000 commensurate with experience. Paid time off allotted as described in Personnel Manual.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Manages and continually evaluates all aspects of adult services on a regular basis and reports to Library Director; provides monthly usage data for statistics reports; maintains up-to-date procedures and policies associated with the duties of this position and recommends new procedures and technologies that would improve the administration of library services to all.
  • Supervises volunteers and trains/assigns duties as needed within adult services role.
  • Submits budget request annually to Library Director for items/services that pertain to the duties of this position.

General Responsibilities:

  • Acquisitions/Collection Development & Maintenance
    • Develops/maintains balanced print, realia, and digital collections for adults including both circulating and non-circulating materials; keeps within budgetary constraints and uses recognized professional journals, authoritative media sources, donated items, recommendations from staff or the public to build collections that meet the needs of community residents.
    • Develops/maintains an electronic database for recording items ordered or subscribed to; monitors/processes reserved items, items recommended for purchase, and items named in honor/memory of someone.
    • Approves invoices for payment that are directly related to duties of position and submits invoices to bookkeeper. Items/invoices that exceed the approved budget for each line item in adult services must be approved by the Director.
    • Develops/maintains a schedule and procedure for evaluating and discarding outdated, damaged, or unused items from both print and digital adult collections.
    • Evaluates placement/orderliness of physical collection; markets specific and/or new print and digital collections using special displays, signage, social media, website, and newsletter.
  • Adult Programming
    • Develops/implements adult programs and events that meet the needs/requests of community residents; regularly evaluates new and existing programs and events to determine participation levels and value; stays within budgetary constraints for materials/supplies.
    • Partners with community organizations and businesses to develop programming that occurs on-site and/or off-site; uses volunteers to assist and/or implement programs.
    • Coordinates the Adult Summer Reading Program in collaboration with the library’s Youth Services Librarian.
    • Markets all programming using in-house signage, social media, website, newsletter and community outlets (as appropriate).
  • Public Services
    • Responsible for working assigned hours at Circulation Desk following written policies and procedures associated with meeting the needs of patrons.

  • Clerical Services/Meeting Attendance/Continuing Education
    • Attends monthly staff meetings, usually held on the Fourth Wednesday of each month at 1:30 PM.
    • Participates in continuing education opportunities, such as Allentown District meetings, local and state workshops, seminars, webinars and conferences at the request of the Library Director. Employees may also request the Library Director’s permission to attend educational opportunities that specifically pertain to their position.
    • Participate in opening/closing the library according to established procedures.
    • Other clerical duties as assigned by the Library Director.
