Sixteen-year-old Miles Franklin, living in the Australian outback in 1895, voices her fears, conflicts and torments about coming of age in a man’s world as Sybylla Melvyn, who longs for refinement, but most of all longs to achieve great things (‘a brilliant career’). But she will have to make a choice.
